2048
About 2048
2048 is a sliding-tile puzzle played on a 4×4 grid. Every move slides all tiles as far as they can go, and when two tiles with the same number collide they merge into one tile with double the value. After each move a new 2 or 4 appears in an empty cell, so the board keeps filling up.
The goal is to build a tile that reads 2048 before the grid locks up, but the game doesn't have to end there: you can carry on to 4096 and beyond. A run is over only when the board is full and no two neighbouring tiles match. Rounds are short, so it suits a quick break, yet consistent high scores come from planning rather than reflexes.

Tips for 2048
- Choose one corner for your biggest tile and never move it out. If it sits in the bottom-left, rely on ← and ↓, use → only when you have to, and press ↑ only when nothing else is possible.
- Build a "snake": keep tiles in descending order along one edge (for example 256 → 128 → 64 → 32) so each merge cascades toward the corner.
- Don't merge just because you can. A merge that drags your big tile away from its corner usually costs more than it gains.
- Keep the row opposite your corner as empty as you can. It is your emergency space when a bad tile spawns.
- Look two moves ahead: before each swipe, ask where the new 2 or 4 could land and whether it would block a merge you are setting up.
- Slow down once the board is more than half full. Most lost games are one rushed swipe, not bad luck.
2048 FAQ
How do you win 2048?
Merge tiles until one of them shows 2048. After that you can keep playing to chase a higher tile and a higher score.
Can I undo a move in 2048?
The classic version has no undo, which is why planning ahead matters so much. If you see an undo button in the game window, it is part of that particular build.
Does the game end when I reach 2048?
No. You can continue to 4096, 8192 and beyond. The game only ends when the grid is full and no neighbouring tiles can merge.
Is 2048 free, and do I need to download it?
It is free and runs in your browser on desktop and mobile. There is nothing to install and no account to create.
